"Chops: technical ability, to execute music physically and to negotiate chord changes. Distinct from the capacity to have good ideas, to phrase effectively and build a solo."
When you bring something new into the world, you normally name it.
I like naming things. According to people that know me, it's the only thing I'm good at. If people are struggling to qualify something, I can generally be relied upon to come up with a name, or catalyse their own naming process.
It's hard coming up with a name for design workshops. You search any word followed by ‘workshops' and the name or Url is already taken, sometimes in lots of ways. There are also a plethora of companies and organisations that might by peddling different wares by a similar name.
I spoke to a few people about the name. The notion of 'chops' came up a few times - UX chops, design chops, research chops and their was something about it that worked for the intended audience. Some people won't get it immediately - and that's fine - it can’t work for everyone.
I like the play on workshops. You’re coming to work your chops. Jamming, riffing, experimenting - all goals or enablers for the events themselves. I do think that good design is more akin to music or cooking than science.
I like the name. I hope others like it too.
